About GIRP

GIRP is a deliberately awkward rock-climbing simulation that turns your keyboard into a sheer cliff face. You play as a climber trying to reach a bird's nest at the summit, but scaling the wall requires rhythmic coordination. The water below you is constantly rising, meaning you cannot pause for long without drowning.

Unlike standard platformers, movement here is entirely physics-based and reliant on maintaining a grip. You must coordinate holding specific letter keys while using muscle-flexing actions to propel yourself upward, creating a tense juggling act between your fingers.

Controls

  • A-Z keys: Press and hold the letter corresponding to a ring on the cliff to grip it. Release to let go.
  • Shift, Ctrl, or Left Mouse Button: Press and hold to flex your muscles and haul yourself upward or swing.

Tips

  • Find a rhythm: You need to alternate between grabbing a hold, flexing to pull yourself up, and reaching for the next letter before you lose momentum.
  • Use your momentum: Swinging is essential for reaching distant rings. Release your grip at the apex of a swing to launch yourself across the wall.
  • Watch the bird: Be prepared for the territorial bird that occasionally interferes with your climb.

GIRP FAQ

How do you climb in GIRP?
You climb by pressing and holding the letter keys that match the rings on the wall to grip them, then pressing Shift, Ctrl, or Left Mouse Button to flex your muscles and pull your character up.
Why does the screen fill with water?
The rising tide acts as a time limit. If you stay in one spot for too long without climbing higher, the water will catch up and you will drown.
Is GIRP related to QWOP?
Yes, both games were created by Bennett Foddy and share a similar design philosophy of using intentionally challenging, physics-based controls.
