About Snake

There is a pure, timeless satisfaction in watching a small string of pixels consume squares on a grid and grow just a little bit longer. Snake remains the standard-bearer for arcade simplicity, placing you in a closed arena where your only goals are to eat food and avoid crashing. As your tail lengthens, the safe area shrinks, turning every successful bite into a new obstacle you have to maneuver around.

The pace shifts dramatically over the course of a round. What starts as a relaxed crawl across an empty board slowly tightens into a tense, claustrophobic puzzle of your own making. You have to constantly plan your route ahead of time, ensuring that the path you take to the next piece of food won't trap your head against an inescapable wall of your own body.

Controls

Use the Arrow Keys or WASD to steer. The movement is continuous, so you only need to tap a key when you want to make a 90-degree turn. You cannot reverse direction directly.

Tips

  • Keep the middle clear: Stick to the outer edges of the grid as much as possible to leave the center open for maneuvering.
  • Pace yourself: Don't rush directly to the food if it forces a tight turn. Take the long way around to keep your body stretched out.
  • Follow your tail: When trapped in a tight space, routing your head directly behind your tail tip can buy you time as it moves out of the way.

Snake FAQ

How do you win a game of Snake?
A perfect game is theoretically achieved when your snake grows large enough to completely fill every available square on the grid, leaving no empty space.
Can I pause the game?
This version runs continuously once started, so you'll need to maintain focus and plan your path until the round ends.
What happens if I hit the wall?
Crashing into any of the outer walls or your own tail will immediately end the round, forcing you to start over from the beginning.
