Blob Opera Game

Blob Opera is a browser-based music toy built by digital artist David Li in collaboration with Google Arts & Culture. Four soft, colorful blobs stand in for a soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor and bass, and a machine-learning model trained on 16 hours of recordings from four real opera singers stands in for their voices. There's no score, no level, and no way to lose — you're conducting a quartet, not clearing a stage.

Grab one blob and the three react around it: the harmony model listens to whatever note you're feeding in and picks chords that fit, so even a clumsy first drag comes out sounding like music. Sessions have no time limit — keep improvising freely, or switch over to one of the built-in seasonal songs if you'd rather hear the quartet perform something composed than hum whatever you feed them.

Controls

• Click and drag a blob up or down to raise or lower its pitch
• Drag a blob forward or backward to change the vowel sound it's singing
• Click a blob to mute or unmute that voice

Tips

• Move slowly at first — big, sudden drags make the harmony model reach for stranger intervals than small ones do
• Mute three blobs and drag just one to hear how much range that single voice actually has on its own
• Try the festive song mode if you'd rather hear the quartet sing something recognizable than freeform
