About Nitrome Must Die

Nitrome Must Die is a two-player platform shooter from Nitrome, built as a tongue-in-cheek victory lap for the studio: you storm Nitrome Towers and fight your way up through waves of enemies pulled from the company's own back catalogue, brought to life by a machine called the Charomat. Each floor is a small arena you have to clear before the elevator doors open and let you climb to the next one.

The run is built from 102 levels split into 11 sets of ten. Most floors are straightforward clear-the-room fights, but the third and sixth level in every set hand you infinite ammo for a single weapon as a timed challenge stage, and the tenth caps the set off with a boss fight. A scoring "gamble" system lets you multiply your points by chaining level clears without dying, at the cost of losing the streak's worth if you fall — so a session can swing between cautious and reckless depending on how much score you're willing to risk.

Controls

Player 1 uses WASD to move and Q to shoot; Player 2 uses the arrow keys to move and / to shoot. Either player can hold the down key near a fallen teammate to revive them. Controls can be rebound from the player-select screen if you'd rather swap the layout.

Tips

  • Weapons are found scattered on each level rather than chosen up front, so grab a new one when you see it — some are far better suited to a crowded room than whatever you're currently holding.
  • Save the infinite-ammo challenge floors (levels 3 and 6 of each set) to burn through tougher enemy types you'd normally want to conserve ammo against.
  • In two-player mode, staying close enough to revive each quickly matters more than splitting up to clear the room faster.
  • If you're chasing a high score, decide early whether you're playing it safe or gambling your streak — dying resets the multiplier completely.

It's a fast, arcade-style game that suits short sessions as much as a longer high-score run, and it plays well solo or with a second player on the same keyboard.
