About Galaga

Galaga is the quintessential arcade space shooter, dropping you straight into a desperate defense against swarms of alien insects. Instead of just hovering at the top of the screen, enemies constantly break formation to dive-bomb your ship, forcing you to constantly weave back and forth while firing up. The pace is frantic but rhythmic, making it easy to learn but challenging to master as the alien swarms grow faster and more aggressive with each wave.

The game's defining feature is the capture mechanic. The green Boss Galagas at the top of the formation will sometimes dive down and activate a tractor beam. If you let them pull your ship in, they capture it. When you respawn, you can carefully shoot that same boss on its next dive to rescue your captured ship, linking them side-by-side to double your firepower—though it also doubles your hitbox.

Controls

Keep it simple and precise:

  • Left / Right Arrow Keys: Move your ship horizontally across the bottom.
  • Spacebar: Fire your lasers.

Tips for Survival

  • Manage your shots: You can only have two bullets on the screen at a time. If you miss and your shots sail into empty space, you'll be left defenseless until they leave the top of the screen.
  • The dual ship is a risk: Getting two ships doubles your damage output and makes clearing waves much easier, but it makes you a massive target. It's often worth the risk early on, but in later stages, the larger hitbox can be a death sentence.
  • Challenging stages are for points: Every few levels, you'll encounter a bonus stage where enemies just fly in patterns without shooting. Memorize their paths to clear all 40 and grab a massive score boost.

Galaga FAQ

How do you get two ships at once in Galaga?
Let one of the green Boss Galagas capture your ship with its tractor beam. When you spawn your next ship, wait for that boss to dive down with your captured fighter and shoot the boss. Your ship will reconnect with you, giving you dual firepower.
Why can't I shoot sometimes?
Galaga limits you to only having two active shots on the screen at any one time. If both of your lasers miss the enemies and are still traveling toward the top of the screen, you won't be able to fire again until they disappear.
What is the highest possible score in Galaga?
The game's score counter maxes out at 9,999,990 points. Because the numbers can't go any higher, reaching this exact score is effectively "beating" the game, though it takes hours of flawless play to achieve.
