About Warfare 1917

Warfare 1917 is a side-view World War I strategy game: you and the enemy each hold a trench line at opposite edges of the screen, and the battle is won by grinding the side back until their line breaks. There's no base-building or resource gathering here, just a steady rhythm of deploying infantry, backing them with artillery, and reading when to push and when to dig in.

You spend the match clicking unit portraits along the bottom of the screen to send riflemen, sharpshooters, machine gunners, assault teams and tanks marching across no man's land. Each side has a grey morale bar at the top of the screen — keep landing kills, capturing ground and fielding tanks to keep yours up, because if it empties your men break and surrender. Matches escalate into a real WWI toolbox: entrenching units for a defense bonus, calling in artillery or mortar barrages on marked targets, gassing an enemy trench, or throwing anti-tank rounds at the side's armor.

Controls

Mouse only. Click a unit's portrait to deploy it (note: deploying resets your unit timers, so don't spam-click). For fire-support options like artillery, mortars, gas or anti-tank barrages, click the icon first, then click the target location on the map.

Tips

  • Machine gunners and sharpshooters are strong once entrenched but weak caught in the open — get them into a trench quickly or keep them behind your riflemen.
  • Assault teams are built for closing distance and clearing enemy trenches, and they'll throw grenades at tanks in a pinch — use them to spearhead a push rather than holding the line.
  • Artillery and mortar strikes have long reload times, so save them for a stacked enemy position instead of firing the moment they're ready.
  • Watch your morale bar as closely as your unit count — a string of losses can collapse it even while you still have men on the field.

It's a slower, tactical session compared to a twitch action game — better suited to someone who wants to think a few moves ahead than someone looking for fast reflex play.

Warfare 1917 FAQ

What are the controls for Warfare 1917?
It's mouse-only. Click a unit portrait to deploy that unit, and for artillery, mortar, gas or anti-tank strikes, click the icon then click the target on the map.
What happens if my morale bar runs out?
Your side's morale is shown as a grey bar at the top of the screen. If it empties, your men break and surrender, so it's worth watching as closely as your unit count.
Which units should I use against enemy tanks?
Assault teams throw grenades at tanks, and anti-tank barrages fire direct rounds at armor — both are better suited to taking out tanks than standard riflemen or machine gunners.
Does entrenching my units actually help?
Yes. Units dug into a trench get a defense bonus, which matters most for fragile units like machine gunners and sharpshooters that are weak caught in the open.
