About SUPERHOT Prototype

SUPERHOT Prototype is the original browser-based proof-of-concept that birthed one of the most innovative first-person shooters of its generation. Created for a 7-day game jam, it strips the FPS genre down to a single, brilliant mechanic: time only moves when you move. When you stand still, the world around you freezes, suspended in slow motion. The moment you take a step, turn your head, or fire your weapon, time snaps back to real speed, turning frantic shootouts into deliberate, puzzle-like choreography.

Each short level drops you into a sterile, minimalist environment against red crystalline enemies. Since one hit means instant death and ammo is strictly limited, you can't run-and-gun. Instead, you have to carefully sidestep incoming red bullet trails, throw your empty gun to shatter an enemy, snatch their weapon out of the air, and return fire—all planned out in the frozen pauses between movements.

Controls

  • WASD: Move
  • Mouse: Look around
  • Left Click: Shoot or throw current object

Tips

  • Stop moving immediately if you feel overwhelmed. The game won't punish you for taking your time to look around and plan your next move.
  • You can throw empty weapons at enemies to stun them, causing them to drop their gun for you to catch.
  • Micro-movements are useful for inching bullets forward just enough so you can slip past them.

It's an essential piece of modern gaming history that perfectly demonstrates how a single strong idea can carry an entire experience. If you enjoy tactical combat or puzzle games, this short demo is absolutely worth your time.

SUPERHOT Prototype FAQ

How do you dodge bullets in SUPERHOT Prototype?
Stop moving to freeze time. Look at the incoming red bullet trails, find a clear path, and use small, deliberate movements to step out of the way before time speeds back up.
Can I pick up enemy weapons in the prototype?
Yes. If you kill or stun an enemy (such as by throwing an empty gun at them), they will drop their weapon. You can walk over it to pick it up or catch it in mid-air.
Is this the full game?
No, this is the original game jam prototype created in 7 days. It features the core time-moving mechanic and a few basic levels, which later led to the full commercial release.
